Evolving the Social Game: Finding Casual by Defining Hardcore
Veteran mobile and casual game developer Tony Ventrice, currently at social game firm Playdom, examines the difference between hardcore and casual play mechanics -- and dispels commonly-held myths about which are which.
Atari launches Atari GO, with plans to 'reinvent' classics for social gaming
Joystiq spoke with Atari Executive VP of Online and Mobile Gaming Thom Kozik, who said that the new program aims to use Atari's catalog and partnered indie developers to "not only move Atari more aggressively into providing casual online and social games, but leverage that well of experience and creativity that all of these independent developers have."
Kozik revealed that some of the Atari GO games will be tied into the company's core games. For example, a Facebook tie-in game might unlock extra content in the upcoming console racer Test Drive Unlimited 2. "So we're able to wire together, for a particular player, their virtual goods, their experiences and what they'll be able to share, back and forth," he explained. Additionally, Atari plans to "reinvent" some of its historic games within a social gaming context. Both Asteroids Online and Deer Hunter Online are due out by the end of the year and serve as "new reimaginings of those IPs in a socialized context," according to Kozik, "with microtransactions and a broader narrative."

TGS: Final Fantasy Legends (mobile)
When I first heard about Final Fantasy Legends, I wasn't at Tokyo Game Show. It was on the train. There was a little billboard for the game, which sort of blew my mind. I'm sure that sort of thing is normal for citizens of Tokyo, but I'm still getting used to seeing advertising for cell phone games in public places.
As for the game, it looks like Final Fantasy 4: After . It's SNES-era Final Fantasysprite to work on an oblong screen, with some issues, frame rate, depending on how powerful phone. From the game point of view, 's old school Final Fantasy. You start this off as a teenage-looking boy, walking through the woods. Then some man jumps out of the bushes at you, and before you can say "discrete encounter", you get into a standard turn-based Final Fantasy 4 Style battle. Exchange several times, and then cute girl shows up, and the three of you form travel parties. From there, it 's with the over the world, where you get more fights (mostly bees) and to prevent public attractions such as the local castle and its ajoining cities.
If you're not burnt of retro Final Fantasy yet, you could do a lot worse than Final Fantasy Legends, especially if you're into the job system stuff. The game is said to have it in droves. Lets hope this one makes it outside of Japan in some form or another.
