The buttons are placed back in a more efficient design that reduces hand strain, simply by reducing the distance your fingers are constantly having to move a button. Not only the buttons, but the stems of the analog sticks are shorter, too.
Although I have not tried the driver on a fighting game, I can see how dramatically improve performance simply by removing most of the time required for the player's fingers to move between buttons. I think it is reasonable to assume that other people with joint problems like mine will really appreciate the design.
